PROGRAM SPECIFICATION INTERNATIONAL STUDIES

 
The ISP is structured to include, not limited to, five components: politics; economics; laws; English language; technical and professional skills, which well express the multidisciplinary features of International Studies.
 
In the latest version curriculum, two minors namely International Relations, and International Development Studies, have been developed. Accordingly, the general knowledge courses are offered in the first four semesters of the program in which learners are equipped with basic knowledge of social sciences and humanities, and general English courses. After that, in the fifth semester, learners will be able to choose one of the two minors according to their needs and ability to satisfy certain requirements of the minors. In each minor, students will take required and elective specialized courses, field trip, internship, and specialized graduation courses (or thesis).

2. Program Objectives
    2.1 General Objectives
The International Studies Program equips undergraduate students with fundamental and in-depth knowledge related to International Studies, with a focus on International Relations and International Development Studies; thus, provide students with the ability to conduct research on international relation matters, regional and international development, and skills to do research, teach and work in the foreign affairs fields. Besides, students are expected to develop ethical and political commitment, a professional working attitude as well as satisfactory overall health to work efficiently to meet the requirements of the labor market in the era of international integration.
 
     2.2 Specific Objectives
– To develop students’ ability to apply knowledge of social sciences and humanities, International Studies, International Relations, and International Development Studies in their learning activities at higher levels.
– To develop students’ knowledge and skills to research, teach and work in foreign affairs and international development fields.
– To improve students’ English language skills including listening, speaking, reading and writing proficiently as these are keys to conducting professional research.
– To develop students’ soft skills, namely communication, teamwork, and information technology to prepare them to work in multidisciplinary and culture diversity environment.
– To formulate students’ political and moral consciousness and good sense of serving the people.

Gradates of the ISP are expected to be equipped with good skills, abilities and attitude to:

– apply knowledge of international laws, economics, international relations, culture, history, area studies, international development studies in working.
– conduct scientific research related to international relations, and international development studies.
– evaluate political, economic and social movements and trends in regional and global contexts.

– apply communication skills in Vietnamese and English effectively in professional activities.
– construct life-long learning as a skill for comprehensively personal development.
– apply legal, professional, ethical, civil responsibilities and obligations in real life situations.
 
4. Job and postgraduate opportunities after graduation
Graduates from the ISP can:
  • Pursue postgraduate study in International Studies major and minors.
  • Lecture and conduct research on International Studies issues at universities, colleges and research institutes.
  • Work in fields of foreign affairs in diplomatic agencies, international cooperation departments, the national defense and security agencies, the journalism and communication agencies at the central and local levels.
  • Work at representative offices for international organizations, governmental and non-governmental organizations in Viet Nam and in other countries.
  • Work at join ventures, state-owned and private enterprises.
 
5. Admission requirements
    Enrolment Candidates
Vietnamese candidates who have been admitted to the University of Foreign Language Studies through the National High School Examination; subjects for enrollment include: Mathematics, Literature, English; or Mathematics, History, English; or Mathematics, English, Social Sciences; or Literature, English, Social Sciences.
 
Foreign candidates, having high school diploma (equivalent to the Viet Nam’s high school diploma), with good Vietnamese language proficiency that meets the requirements prescribed by the University of Foreign Language Studies – The University of Da Nang, (UFLS-UD) are eligible as prospect applicants.
 
6. Training Process and Graduation Conditions
    6.1 Training Process
The ISP is organized by academic courses, academic year and semesters according to the regulated credit-based training system for the full-time mode of study.
 
An academic year at the UFLS consists of two main semesters and one summer semester. The main semester is comprised of 15 study weeks and 2-3 examination weeks. The summer semester is comprised of 5 study weeks and 1 examination week.
 
Academic course is designed for student to accomplish a specific curriculum. Normally, it takes from 3.5 to 4 years to complete the undergraduate degree in International Studies.
 
The maximum time to graduate is comprised of: designed duration of the program (4 years), plus 4 additional semesters.
 
     6.2 Graduation Conditions
At the end of the program, students who fulfill the following conditions will be eligible for graduation:
– Until graduation time, students are not prosecuted for criminal activities or not on disciplinary, probationary period;
– Accumulate enough credits as specified in the training program;
– Have cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale;
– Have obtained Military Training, and Physical Education certificates;
– Fulfill the expected learning outcomes on English and Informatics (Based on the regulation on the expected learning outcomes of English Proficiency and Informatics issued by Rector of the University of Foreign Language Studies).
