FIELD TRIP OF VIETNAMESE CULTURE AND ARTS STUDY FOR EXCHANGE STUDENTS
On June 14th, 2020, the Faculty of International Studies organized a field trip for exchange students of Guangxi National University, China who are studying Vietnamese and Vietnamese Culture at the Faculty to My Son Sanctuary, Thanh Ha Pottery Village and Hoi An Ancient Town, Quang Nam Province. This practical experience plays an important role in giving opportunities for these students to study and better understand the Vietnamese culture and arts.
At My Son Sanctuary, the students were interested in stories of Mr. Le Xuan Tien (guide) about ancient Cham relics and ancient temples from the 14th century to the present, including many temples devastated through two wars against France and America. They were also very excited to be explained about and differentiated betweennew and old bricks that some of them are thousand-year-old. The students were very surprised to know how the ancient Cham people used baked bricks to create My Son Sanctuary by carving and stacking bricks on top of each other without any adhesion. The older the bricks, the more beautiful and not mossy they are, except for the cracked ones. Coming to My Son Sanctuary, the students not only admire the unique temple architecture, extremely sophisticated sculptures, lifelike, traces of Cham writing, but also enjoy the special cultural repertoire of Cham people like Apsara dance, water dance team, et cetera.
After the journey to My Son Sanctuary, the students took a lunch break at Hoi An Silk Village Resort & Spa and enjoy Hoi An cuisine such as: Cao Lau, dumplings, Chicken rice, Tofu, and other specialties.
In the afternoon, they went to visit Thanh Ha Pottery Village, where they had many interesting experiences. The excitement showed on each face when the students made their own ceramic products such as flowerpots, cups used to drink water and so on. The students cherished them as treasures for their loved ones.
After that, the students continued to visit Phung Hung ancient house, Hoi An ancient town and Chua Cau. Chua Cau is considered the “heart” of the ancient town of Hoi An in the central province of Quang Nam. It is a beautiful historical piece, featuring the cultural and architectural exchange between Vietnam, Japan and China. Thus, the students had many great photos with the symbol of Hoi An town.
The trip was really a memorable highlight for the students in the one-year time of studying and living at the University of Foreign Languages - University of Danang. If studying at school helps them practice Vietnamese skills and provide them with basic knowledge about Vietnamese history and culture, this field trip provides them with practical opportunities to comprehend the knowledge learned in class, improve listening, speaking, reading and writing skills through out-door classes.
After a day of experience at My Son Sanctuary, Thanh Ha Pottery Village and Hoi An Ancient Town seemed to be very tired but happy and fluttering. “I have traveled everywhere and Hoi An is still in my heart, the lanterns have given me a feeling of a peaceful and historic life”, a student said.
