‘What to study and what to do after graduation?’ is a frequent question for many students, especially the final-year students in FIS. Understanding their concerns, on August 20th 2022, under the permission of the Party Committee and the Board of Directors of University of Foreign Language Studies – the University of Danang, the Faculty of International Studies held a workshop named “People choose career, career chooses people” that aims to orient students to choose their suitable career in the future.
The workshop was successful with the participation of the Board of Dean, lecturers, alumni, and many students of Faculty of International Studies. Speakers of the workshop were four alumni working with different professions in different organizational positions.
At the beginning of the workshop, Ms. Le Thi Phuong Loan (MA) – Acting Vice Dean of the Faculty of International Studies said: “The Faculty holds workshops with the contents of professional orientation every year to help students choose their right career orientation, instruct students to equip knowledge as well as essential skills before their graduation. This year, the guests are former students of the major International Studies, they have gone through different procession and career paths to gain their job positions in society at present. They will be people who directly share their own experiences and lessons to our next generation of students learning in the same major to help accumulate useful information and have more choices in terms of career orientation in the future.”
With shared experiences of knowledge accumulation, practice in skills, process of finding jobs as well as self-working experiences, the speakers helped students to visualize their own paths on career orientation after their graduation, and also helped them to clarify their profession expectations.
Ms. Hua Thi Thuy – a speaker with a sincere advice drawn upon her own experience said: “Do it! Don’t be afraid! Be confident! Do the best as you can! Be ready to catch up your opportunities! …” . This motivated many students at the workshop to be more confident on their selection of professions ahead.
With the current position as the Secretary of the Union of Lien Chieu District, Danang, speaker Huynh Thanh Binh (an alumnus) has shared his process of knowledge accumulation and skill development since he was still a university student. He additionally shared about the working environment in a government sector for students to visualize and make their early decision on profession.
Sharing about job opportunities in non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in which International Studies students are interested, Ms. Ho Tran Thanh Huyen and Mr. Nguyen Huu Hung – the speakers and also alumni of the Faculty helped many students to gain clear understanding of this kind of job. Students initially understood about the working environment in NGOs and their recruitment channels, what necessary conditions needed to work or become potential interns in those organizations.
After the sharing of all speakers, there was a discussion between participants and speakers. Students raised many questions related to career orientation after their graduation to four speakers. Students at the workshop would like to know more about speakers’ job positions, their working industries, and listen to their advice and experiences to be ready and find success in their future career.
After spending time listening to speakers’ sharing, as well as expressing their own concerns and feelings of career orientation, all students were delighted and more confident on their own path. Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoang Anh – a student of class K19QTHCLC01 said: “I am grateful for what our speakers share with us this afternoon. You all wholeheartedly express your experiences and lessons to us. I can now discover many things related to career path that I have wondered for a long time. Thank you to the faculty for allowing us to attend such a useful and meaningful event.”
After the workshop at the university hall, a cozy meeting between FIS Board of Dean, staffs, lecturers, and alumni was held. This was an emotional meeting for all to meet up with others for a long time in the faculty. Everyone would like to express their deep gratitude to FIS Board of Dean and lecturers who have built up the foundation and have imparted knowledge and essential skills to students before their graduation so that they could have successful careers and happy lives today./.
