On the afternoon of October 6, 2021, the Faculty of International Studies – University of Foreign Languages - The University of Da Nang (FIS) held a Graduate Thesis Consulting for students of cohort 2018. This FIS’s event takes place every year for the seniors.
The event was held via Microsoft Teams due to Covid-19. However, the atmosphere was still exciting, and the sessions were very effective and practical for all seniors – cohort 2018.
The consultants are professional FIS lecturers, and the moderator is Ms. Nguyen Vo Huyen Dung (M.A), Vice Dean of FIS. The event took place for an unexpectedly long period of time with many ideas around the issue of Graduate Thesis (GT).
At the beginning of the event, Ms. Le Nguyen Hai Van (M.A), Deputy Head of Division of Asian Studies, presented many useful information related to GT in an easy-to-understand way with vivid slides. She initially helped students answer questions such as what GT is, why seniors should do GT, and the conditions to be done GT.
Although Ms. Van’s introduction supported some senior’s doubts, writing a thesis can indeed be very difficult. The seniors continued to ask a variety of aspects such as: research topic, methodology, sources, surveys and tests, etc.
Dr. Nguyen Hung Vuong listened to senior’s queries and answers his/her questions in a very clear and patient manner. According to him, one of the first factors to be successful in doing research is a passion for science. He helped the students choose interesting topics for their proposal. He also suggested ideas as to how to convert the student’s selected topic into useful research projects. He finally introduced the students by providing construction in deciding the methodology of the student’s research.
After the presentation of Ms. Van and Dr. Vuong, the atmosphere was more and more exciting. By sending links for students to ask questions, many problems are raised. In general, the questions revolved around issues related to the thesis such as how to write the theoretical framework, how to build a survey form, who is her/his supervisor, etc.
